The elevated pressure can easily damage the lining of your artery’s walls. This may lead to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), heart disease, and possibly a stroke. The constant pressure can even result in a section of the arterial wall to enlarge, leading to an aneurysm in the aorta or brain.

And of course, the kidneys and eyes are also affected. High blood pressure is the most common cause of kidney failure. And in the eyes, the arterial damage mentioned above could potentially cause severe vision problems because of fluid buildup or nerve damage.

The medical profession’s solutions to this are drugs like ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, calcium-channel blockers, and diuretics. The truth is that no high blood pressure medication comes without any undesirable side effects. If you are currently taking high blood pressure medication or are likely to be doing so sometime soon, there are a few things you will need to understand about these drugs.

Some of the unpleasant effects of taking these medications include:

  • Impotence
  • Chronic dry, hacking cough
  • Swollen ankles

Garlic – This herb contains sulfides that help relax your arteries which in turn assists your blood is flowing more freely. A scientific study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences observed that garlic can relax blood vessel tension by an impressive 72 percent. Eat one to two cloves of fresh garlic per day for maximum benefit. If you are worried about the smell on your breath and you would rather use a supplement make sure to choose one that gives you at least 3,600 mcg of allicin – garlic’s active compound.

Hawthorn – This is another herbal blood pressure supplement that has been used for centuries as a heart tonic. As with garlic, it relaxes the blood vessels. This is done as a result of inhibiting enzymes referred to as angiotensin-converting enzymes. (They are what cause a person’s blood vessels to constrict). Prescription medications such as ACE inhibitors work in much the same way, but with considerably more dangerous side effects. Hawthorn was very effective in reducing diastolic blood pressure in one particular clinical trial. The usual recommended dosage is 1,000 mg of hawthorn extract daily.

CoQ10 – A large number of people that were using high blood pressure medications have been able to discontinue taking them simply by supplementing with CoQ10. Research published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition confirms what several physicians have observed in their practices. Researchers gave CoQ10 to patients with type two diabetes. Not only did their blood sugar improve, their blood pressure improved at the same time. This extremely effective and excellent antioxidant works by providing the heart with the essential energy it needs to pump blood throughout the body. Without CoQ10 a person’s heart would quite simply stop beating. It is advisable to take 50 to 100 mg of the most potent form of CoQ10 referred to as ubiquinol.

Quercetin – This is a powerful antioxidant. It is a “bioflavonoids” that naturally occur in foods like red grapes, apples, onions, and leafy greens. In one study, researchers gave 22 people with high blood pressure quercetin for four weeks. At the end of the study, they showed significant improvement. The easiest way to get more quercetin is to eat more fruits and leafy green veggies. Alternatively, you can get a supplement at your local health-food store. We recommend 300 to 750 mg per day.

Some of the above do need to be purchased in supplement form while others can easily be obtained from foods. But by buying individual products, instead of those with a combination of ingredients, you can ensure you are taking the optimal amount and will be better able to ascertain what works best for you.
